Principal Announcement

We have just received the news that Jason Munro was the successful applicant for the ongoing Principal position at Westbourne Park. We are absolutely thrilled for Jason as it is a fantastic recognition of his skills and abilities in positively shaping a school. I’m sure the school community will join me in congratulating and thanking him for his wonderful leadership and significant contributions to Eden Hills Primary’s improvement journey over the last 4 years. We are looking forward to inviting Jason back to Eden Hills to show our appreciation later in the year.

This has meant the Principal position For Eden Hills Primary has now been advertised. This application period runs until Thursday 3 September and then a panel process will occur. The outcome of the process will potentially be known at the end of this term or early Term 4.

Pupil Free Days

We had a productive Pupil Free Day at the beginning of term with our work on Brightpath writing moderation and the alignment of this work to the Australian Curriculum A – E grading system. Staff were thoroughly engaged in the process and it created some rich debate and dialogue on how best to support the creation of powerful writers. Kellie did a fantastic job of running the day and the feedback was that it was a valuable process as it enhanced teachers’ capacity to assess more accurately and therefore target teaching points more effectively to students’ learning needs.

We then complemented this work on writing with our next Pupil Free day focusing on the Seven Steps to Writing success. This day was run by our Writing Professional Learning Community. A big thank you to Marilla and Matilda for facilitating the day, you both did a wonderful job in leading and up-skilling the staff to drive our writing improvement agenda.

COVID-19 update

The heightened situation in Victoria has been a timely reminder that we all need to continue to remain vigilant to support the strong position South Australia currently holds. Therefore, as a school we remain committed to the following:

  • Social Distancing: We continue to ask that parents/carers adhere to Social Distancing guidelines (1.5m spacing) when dropping off or picking up children outside of classrooms. To support everyone’s safety we ask that you minimize your time onsite if you have to accompany your child to their class. Leaving the school grounds promptly after dropping off and before 3.30pm is greatly appreciated.
  • Communication / Teacher contact: We ask that parents make a time if they require face to face discussion with their teacher by contacting them through Seesaw or Email or they may make alternative arrangements such as phone or video conference.
  • Cleaning (extra 3 hours per day): daily clean of shared areas, classrooms, high touch surfaces and table tops
  • Volunteers: Our volunteer program has recommenced with all volunteers requiring their mandatory checks and a completion of the Departmental COVID form upon each entry.
  • Assembly: Thank you to everyone for returning your permission forms, if you have yet to return yours please do so as soon as possible. It was wonderful to be able to share and celebrate our successes with the school community virtually in Week 3 with over 100 views.
  • Swimming program: This has been postponed until further notice. Unfortunately, due to current restrictions we are unable to bring sufficient numbers of staff or parents to the venue to adequately support our children.
  • In the event of a confirmed case of COVID-19 our school will be temporarily closed. We will then follow our protocol in line with SA Health and the Department for Education.

Kind regards,

Governing Council

The EHPS Spring Fair has been cancelled for 2020. The current and potential restrictions for Coronavirus preclude the school from staging the event this year.

The Spring Fair is run every two years as our main community fundraising event. It is held on the years without Canberra Trips due to the planning efforts that are needed.

Our next Spring Fair will be held in 2022. We will encourage parents to form a Spring Fair Committee late next year to begin the planning.

Community fairs are a big tradition for EHPS that we hope will continue with renewed success.

In term 2, upper primary students from rooms 7,8,11 and 12 were given a skill acquisition challenge of learning to juggle with three balls. There are numerous benefits, both physical and cognitive, associated with mastering the skill of juggling and it was amazing to see the hard work, dedication and persistence showed by the students at EHPS to achieve this goal.

Junior and middle primary students continued to work hard on mastering their fundamental movement skills including running, skipping, throwing, catching and kicking in lessons through a variety of different sports, games and activities.

From week 4 this term (term 3), students will use their PE lesson times to prepare for the annual sports day in week 9. Students will participate in, and learn about, a variety of different track and field events including sprints, hurdles, long jump, high jump and long distance running.

100 Days of School

Last week Room 3 & 4 celebrated reaching 100 days of school.

We dressed up as 100-year-olds because it was our 100th day of school. Some of us used walking sticks. Inez

I had glasses, a beard and a moustache and eyebrows with face paint. We did lots of activities for 100 days, like 100 licks of a lollipop and colour the squares until it makes 100. Winston

I had some glasses on and a grey wig and I had a walking stick. We made 100 eyes and licked a lollipop 100 times. Emily

We celebrated 100 days of school. We dressed up as a 100-year-old and I wore glasses. Alpa

EHPS Propagation Shed

The Propagation Shed is now up and running and the Green Team has been busy preparing pots for seedlings and turning the soil in the garden beds, in readiness for planting in the upcoming spring months.

If you have any small to medium-sized pots, garden cuttings, hardy native shrubs, or fruit and vegetable seeds or seedlings suitable for propagation, we would love to take them off your hands in order to get our gardens growing.

We are also looking to establish one or two deciduous vines up over the Propagation Shed’s exterior, to provide some shade over summer and let light in during the cooler months. If you have anything suitable (passionfruit, grape, or a glory vine) we would be incredibly happy to receive these as well.

If you can donate any of the above items please email Perdita at perdita.hope720@schools.sa.edu.au

Many thanks,
The Green & Gardening Teams

Japanese Cultural Day

On Wednesday 2 September, Eden Hills Primary School will be celebrating the amazing culture of Japan by having a whole-school Japanese Day. In the morning, Room 5 will be hosting a Japanese themed assembly in which the Cultural Day will be introduced. Afterwards, classes will be travelling around the school with their ‘buddy’ class and participating in various cultural activities: tamaire (a Japanese sport which involves throwing small beanbags into hoops), origami, fit-ball relay, kendama (traditional Japanese toy) craft, hachimaki (white fabric headband) making and watching a Japanese theatrical performance. To get into the spirit of the day, we encourage students to dress-up in Japanese themed attire (e.g. sumo, karate, Hello Kitty, samurai, Totoro, Pokémon, judo, manga, anime, kimono etc.) or wear red and white, the colours of the Japanese flag. If they are unable to dress up, school uniform is still required.

Sushi lunch orders will be available on the day. The Blackwood Canteen has agreed to provide sushi for us at a cost of $3.00 per roll. You will need to order the Sushi before 10:00am Friday 28 August via QKR under ‘special food day’.

Sushi that will be available:

Teriyaki chicken, Teriyaki beef, Tuna and avocado, California, Salmon and avocado, Pumpkin and avocado, Vegetarian (carrot, cucumber, avocado)

Change of Address & Phone Numbers

Please let the front office know of any changes to family contact details should they occur. Email addresses and mobile phone numbers are particularly important as we have whole school contact lists for both forms of communication, allowing us to contact families in case of an emergency or for important reminders. It is also important to inform us of change of address for correspondence sent home (e.g. start of year packs). We will need a copy of a utilities bill or a rental agreement with your new address on it.

Parking Controls Around Schools

The Mitcham council has sent correspondence to advise that it will continue with the monitoring of parking areas around schools, kindergartens and childcare centres. Any breaches of the Australian Road Rules 1999 observed by Community Safety Officers may result in the issue of an expiation notice.

Please click the link below to a brochure which informs drivers about public safety and providing for student safety around roadways at school drop off and pick up times.
